The San Francisco Giants edged closer to .500 in the replay after winning three of four games against the Colorado Rockies. After the teams split the first two games, the Giants had their two highest-scoring games of the season to capture the series and improve to 17-18.
Luis Matos led the way at the plate, going 7-for 13 (.538) with two homers. Lamonte Wade also homered twice in the series. Justin Verlander and Logan Webb were great in their starts.

May 1 (6-1 win): Justin Verlander had another excellent outing, giving up one run in six innings, to improve to 2-3. In real life, his second win didn’t come until August 26. A five-run third inning in which Willy Adames hit a three-run homer (his sixth) and Luis Matos had a two-run shot was the difference. Colorado got a run in the fourth on Ryan McMahon’s RBI single. The Giants closed out the scoring on Patrick Bailey’s RBI single in the sixth.

May 2 (4-2 loss): The Rockies got all the runs they would need in the first inning. The first two batters singled and Hunter Goodman hit a two-run triple to make it 2-0 before the first out was recorded. Goodwin scored on Michael Toglia’s sacrifice fly. Wilmer Flores had an RBI single in the fourth inning and Matt Chapman hit a solo homer (his team-best seventh) in the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-2. Toglia added an RBI single in the eighth to make it a two-run game. The Giants got the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t make the comeback. Robbie Ray fell to 3-2.

May 3 (12-5 win): The Giants put up nine runs in the first two innings. Matt Chapman had a two-run single in a three-run first inning. In a six-run second inning, Willy Adames and Chapman drew bases-loaded walks and LaMonte Wade had a three-run homer. The Rockies closed the gap to 9-5 in the middle innings, but the GIants added to their total on a Chapman sacrifice fly in the sixth, and an RBI single by Jung Hoo Lee and a sacrifice fly be Heliot Ramos in the eighth. Jordan Hicks’ numbers weren’t great, but the run support helped him to improve to 2-2.

Jung Hoo Lee, Matt Chapman and Wilmer Flores had three consecutive RBI singles, LaMonte Wade hit his second three-run homer in two games and Christian Koss added a two-run homer. Luis Matos would add a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Logan Webb was terrific again, giving up one run in seven innings. He improved to 3-3 and lowered his ERA to 1.89. Hunter Goodman accounted for all of Colorado’s offense with two solo homers.
