The San Francisco Giants won their first two road games against the Chicago Cubs, giving them a season-best four-game winning streak, as well as seven wins in eight games, and putting them above .500 for the first time this season. They would lose the finale, however, to fall to 19-19.

May 5 (3-2 win): Landen Roupp had the best start of the season by anyone not named Logan Webb, as he pitched seven shutout innings and only gave up two hits. The Giants scored three early runs. Willy Adames doubled and scored on Jung Hoo Lee’s single in the first inning. Wilmer Flores led off the second with a double and scored on Christian Koss’ two-out single. In the fourth, Heliot Ramos provided a two-out RBI single. Despite Roupp’s great start, the bullpen almost gave it away. Michael Busch hit a solo homer for the Cubs in the eighth, In the ninth, Pete Crow-Armstrong singled and scored on Nico Hoerner’s double. The Cubs moved the potential tying run to third place with one out, but the Giants held on for the win. Roupp improved to 2-3 and Camilo Doval earned his fourth save.

May 6 (7-5 win): The Giants once again got off to a great start, as Wilmer Flores and Patrick Bailey both hit two-run homers in the top of the second inning. But in the bottom of the second, Justin Verlander left the game with an injury, leaving it in the hands of the Giant bullpen. Once again, it didn’t got well, as the Cubs went from a 4-0 deficit to a 5-4 lead after six innings. Seiya Suzuki had a solo homer in the third, Kyle Tucker hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Michael Busch had a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth. However, San Francisco regained the lead in the seventh. They loaded the bases with two outs and Jung Hoo Lee cleared the bases with a triple, making it 7-5. The Cubs put runners on first and second base with one out in both the eighth and ninth innings but Giant relievers Spencer Bivens and Ryan Walker came through late.

May 7 (6-2 loss): The Giants scored both their runs before the fans were in their seats, as Mike Yastrzemski doubled and Willy Adames hit his team-high-tying seventh home run of the season before an out was made. That was all San Francisco would get, however, and Robbie Ray would have another tough start to fall to 3-3. The Cubs took the lead for good in the third inning on Carson Kelly’s RBI double.
