The San Francisco Giants won two of three games for the second straight series, this time at home against the Kansas City Royals. Both teams won by shutout (Robbie Ray was excellent in the opener), and then the Giants pulled off a late victory in the finale thanks to a Mike Yastrzemski home run. Heliot Ramos batted .400 (4-for-10) to lead the Giant hitters. The season has reached the 50-game mark.

May 19 (2-0 win): After being shelled in his last five starts, Robbie Ray turned things around and pitched seven scoreless innings, helping the Giants to their second shutout win of the season. Ray gave up four hits and no walks and improved to 4-3. He had help on defense, as Jung Hoo Lee threw out a runner trying to score in the seventh inning. The Giants loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning and Lee’s RBI groundout provided the first run of the game. In the sixth inning, Willy Adames led off with a walk and later scored on Luis Matos’ double to the Giants’ second run.

May 20 (6-0 loss): The Royals came back with a shutout of their own, the sixth time it’s happened to the Giants this season. Michael Lorenzen gave up five hits in eight innings and the Giants only got a runner into scoring position once, when Casey Schmitt doubled to lead off the third inning. Drew Waters had a pair of RBI singles and Kyle Isbel had an RBI single, a sacrifice fly and an RBI triple. Hayden Birdsong made his first start of the season but was hit hard and fell to 1-2.

May 21 (5-2 win): Mike Yastrzemski broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run homer to propel the Giants to the win. It was his sixth of the season. Earlier, Heliot Ramos hit a two-run homer, his seventh, to give the Giants a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Logan Webb had another excellent start going but faltered in the seventh, as the Royals tied the game on Freddy Fermin’s RBI single. Webb had won his last three starts but took a no-decision in this one.
