After losing three of four on the road to the San Diego Padres, the San Francisco Giants have lost two series in a row for the first time since early July. They won the opener but then suffered three straight losses, giving them six defeats in the last seven contests.
Casey Schmitt batted .429 (6-for-14) with two home runs and four RBI to lead the Giants, who fell to 71-57 (10 games better than real life).

August 18 (7-5 win): The Giants hit three homers: Tyler Fitzgerald (his sixth) with a solo shot in the second, Rafael Devers (his 13th) with a two-run bomb in the third and Willy Adames (his 32nd) with a two-run blast in the seventh. Adames’ blow gave the Giants a 7-2 lead. The Padres, which earlier got a two-run homer by Bryce Johnson, added a three-run homer by Fernando Tatis in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-5, but they wouldn’t get any closer. Robbie Ray improved to 11-7 with the win.

August 19 (5-4 loss): The Padres went up 4-1 in the second inning after a two-run triple by Fernando Tatis and a two-run double by Manny Machado. Ramon Laureano made it 5-1 in the fifth with a solo homer. The Giants made a game of it in the eighth. Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer (his 14th), and Casey Schmitt immediately followed with his second solo homer of the game (giving him 10 on the season) to cut the deficit to 5-4. But San Diego retired the final five Giant batters after that.

But the Padres scored four times in the fifth inning, including a three-run homer by Fernando Tatis, to take a 5-2 lead. The Giants would get one back on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Tyler Fitzgerald. But the Giants stranded runners on first and second in the seventh, second and third in the eighth and the bases loaded in the ninth. Landen Roupp fell to 7-7 with the loss.
